Use the triangle symbol

Most standard fonts now include a triangle symbol (△). You can highlight and copy it below, or you can use one of the following methods to insert it in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Getting the triangle symbol in Microsoft Word

(Note: The examples were made with Microsoft Word, but the process is similar in Excel and PowerPoint.)
  1. Go to the “Insert” menu and select “Symbol...”, or go to the “Insert” and select “Symbol” → “More symbols...”

  2. In the “Character code” box, type “25b3.”, then select the triangle symbol, and then click “Insert”.
    (If the triangle does not appear for your current font, you may need to switch to a font that includes it, such as MS Mincho.)
    2 5 B 3, is typed into the, Character code, box, and the triangle is selected.
  3. The symbol will be inserted wherever you were typing. You can highlight and then copy and paste the symbol to skip the “Insert” → “Symbol...” step, however the Insert Symbol window does also include a row of the most recently used symbols, from which you can select the triangle without searching for it again.

Getting the triangle symbol in Google Docs

  1. Go to “Insert” → “Special characters”.

  2. In the “Insert special characters” dialog, search for “25b3” in the box on the right, and then select the triangle symbol from the box on the left. It will be identified as “WHITE UP-POINTING TRIANGLE (U+25B3)” if you hover your mouse cursor over it for a moment.

    You can also search for “triangle” and then locate the “WHITE UP-POINTING TRIANGLE (U+25B3)”.
    Triangle, is typed into the search box, and the white up-pointing triangle is selected from the various triangle symbols returned from the search.
  3. When you select the triangle symbol, it will be inserted wherever you were typing. You can highlight and then copy and paste the symbol to avoid having to insert it from the menu every time.

Getting the triangle symbol from the Windows Character Map

  1. Go to “Start”, and in the All Apps list, select “Windows Accessories” → “Character Map”.

    On older versions of Windows, this is under “Start” → “Programs“ → “Accessories” → “System Tools” → “Character Map”.

  2. Scroll down until you reach the triangle symbol. The status bar at the bottom can tell you the code of any symbol you click on, and the codes increase as you scroll down. Scroll until you reach “U+25B3: White Up-Pointing Triangle”.
    (If the triangle does not appear for your current font (e.g., the numbers skip straight from “U+25AC” to “U+25CA”), you may need to switch to a font that includes it, such as MS Mincho.)
    The triangle symbol is selected in the character map.  The status bar at the bottom says, U + 2 5 B 3, White Up-Pointing Triangle.
  3. Click the “Select” button. The triangle symbol should appear in the white box to the left of the button. If it does, click “Copy”.
  4. You can now paste the triangle symbol into Microsoft Word or another program.
