Camberville Landway 2026 Update
While the protected micromobility network in Boston shrank a bit in the past year, we saw quiet, steady progress across the river in Cambridge and Somerville.
The expansions weren't as exciting to everyone this year, with some, like Maffa Way/Mystic Ave., being smaller parts of a much larger project, and others, like Middlesex Ave. and Vassar St., primarily serving destinations along them. Even so, the finished Summer St. lanes are some of the most lovely in the country, and we got a very exciting win with MassDOT installing flex posts along the BU Bridge micromobility lanes!
The other reason for the more restrained progress was, of course, the slant of the previous Cambridge City Council. Thanks to amazing community engagement in last fall's elections (and Cambridge's and Somerville's leaders embracing their mandate instead of seemingly adopting their opponents' agenda like Mayor Wu), we are set to see some major cross-town connections over the next couple years!
The Elm-Beacon Connector, Mass. Ave. Partial Construction, and remainder of Broadway (Cambridge) will absolutely transform the network by the end of this year. Furthermore, the projects on west Broadway (Somerville), Huron, and River will meet folks arriving from Arlington, Belmont, and Allston with protected lanes. And with Cambridge St. and Somerville Ave. coming next year, even more cross-town connections are about to get way less stressful!
The spring 2026 landway maps will be up on the landway website in the next week or so. If you are unfamiliar with the Boston area landway project and want to learn more, see “Not The Subway, Not The Highway—Introducing The Landway!”
